Former CU Phoenix standout
Former Cumberland University player Maci Lerno has been hired as the new varsity volleyball coach at Friendship Christian School.
Lerno was an all-conference a middle hitter for the Phoenix after she transferred in from Palomar Community College in California.
She takes over for John Stephens who resigned following the 2016 season and has been hired as the volleyball coach at Franklin Road Academy.
The Lady Commanders went 36-12 last season under the direction of Stephens and reached the Division II sib-state.
Lerno, a El Centro, Calif. native, was a volleyball standout at Southwest High School prior to her time at Palomar in San Diego County.
A two-year stater at Cumberland, she helped lead the Phoenix to a record of 19-13 as a senior in 2016 with a team-leading 352 kills.
She was named a 2016 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete and was a second team All Mid-South Conference pick.
Lerno ranked fifth in the conference in kills (347) and kills per set (3.1) while ranking 10th in digs (355) and 11th in digs per set (3.2).
Lerno has coached the past two years with the Lebanon-based Airborne Club Volleyball organization.
Lerno will be assisted at the varsity level by Terri Seagraves, a fifth grade teacher at FCS.
