No. 2 vs. No. 4 teams in state
Two teams with identical 10-1 records will collide Friday in Jasper as No. 4-ranked Watertown tackles No. 2-ranked Marion County in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Live radio coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on WANT FM-98.9 from Bill Baxter Stadium. A free audio feed is available at

Watertown comes in fresh from a workman-like 38-24 first round home win over Boyd Buchanan.

The Purple Tigers will be a great effort Friday night against the Warriors, who held Westmoreland to negative yardage in last week's 42-0 home victory.

While Watertown sports a pair of Class 2A Mr. Football semifinalists in tackle Rusty Staats and QB Seth Price; two Warrior have also earned Mr. Football consideration.

Seniors Alex Kirkendoll and Hunter McClain have earned Mr. Football lineman consideration for their play at linebacker.

Kirkendoll ranks among the area's tackle leaders with 126 and also has 11 for loss, three sacks and two safeties for a defense that has allowed just four rushing TDs this season.

McClain has 73 tackles, 10 for loss, and has rushed for 801 yards from his fullback position.

Staats has committed to the U.S. Air Force Academy while Price, who has thrown for over 2,500 yards with 37 touchdowns and only seven interceptions, is considering several Division I baseball offers.

Senior wide receiver Vonte Bates leads Watertown with 55 receptions for 916 yards -- an average of 16.5 per catch with 10 touchdowns.

Sophomore slot receiver Heath Price has 36 catches for 668 yards, 18.5 per and 10 scores.
