Lady 'Cats eliminate Northeast 8-2
Wilson Central’s softball team will play for the Region 5-AAA championship Thursday as Clarksville High comes to Gladeville for a 6 p.m. contest. Heavy rains on Wednesday forced the finals to be pushed back 24 hours.
The Lady Wildcats eliminated Clarksville Northeast 8-2 Monday night, improving to 31-15 on the season.
Coach Michael Shepard’s squad has now won eight consecutive games, dating back to a 3-2 loss to Soddy Daisy on April 19.
Clarksville (33-14) blanked Beech 6-0 in Monday’s other semifinal game -- winning for the fourth straight time.
Regardless of Thursday’s outcome, both teams will move on to TSSAA sectional games Friday. Sectional winners will earn spots in next week’s Spring Fling in Rutherford County.
Monday night vs. Northeast, Wilson Central manufactured four runs in the bottom of the third to stretch a 2-1 lead to 6-1.
Brittany Wiseman led off the third inning with a walk. Courtesy runner Keily Preston was bunted over to second by Morgan Powell before Katie Eakes dropped a bunt down for a base hit.
Eakes then stole second giving Central runners on second and third, before Kendall Eden singled up the middle to score Powell.
Eden moved into scoring position with a steal of second before Brooke Pfefferle executed a squeeze bunt scoring Eakes from third.
Eden scored all the way from second when the Northeast third baseman threw the ball into right field.
Wilson Central scored two more runs in the fifth with back-to-back singles by Powell and Eakes, before Eden sacrificed them over with a bunt.
Pfefferle again came up with a big hit, scoring both Powell and pinch runner Kendal Tomlin.
Hannah Bodenhorn pitched all seven innings, giving up six hits, one earned while striking out nine.
