College Hills Church of Christ will host its annual School Store from 8-11 a.m. on Saturday, July 26.
The give-away will provide children in grades Pre-K through 8 with the school supplies they need to get ready for the 2014-2015 school year at Byars-Dowdy, Southside, Carroll Oakland, Tuckers Crossroads, Watertown Elementary, Castle Heights Elementary, Walter J. Baird Middle, Winfree-Bryant Middle, Coles Ferry and Sam Houston.
Event founders Jim and Annabelle Robinson, who are both retired from education, have gathered and distributed supplies for the past 19 years – and said that there is an increase in need from year-to-year. Annabelle said that in 2013 the School Store gave backpacks full of pencils, paper and other tools to 1,144 students.
“We are expecting that many or more this year,” she added. “We have 300 members who will be helping us on Saturday.”
After each student, accompanied by a parent or guardian, gets their backpack in the main auditorium, they are directed to another room to get grade-specific supplies. Annabelle said that smaller children need supplies such as glue and crayons, while other students need spiral notebooks, binders and folders.
“All ages get pencils and erasers,” she said.
The Robinsons rely on donations from church members and organizations to purchase the supplies and backpacks. “We have a very large, very generous congregation,” she continued.
All items are first come, first served. College Hills Church of Christ is located at 1401 Leeville Pike, Lebanon.
