School board stands firm

The Wilson Post

Wilson County Board of Education decided it had "a moral obligation" to send the school budget back to the county Education and Finance committees unchanged at their reconvened meeting on Monday night.

And when the Wilson County Commission heard about the decision, members were equally clear they would not be willing to raise taxes to fund the school budget.

Director of Schools Mike Davis pointed out that the last time the commission raised taxes was in 2001 to open Wilson Central High School.

Since that time the school enrollment in the county school system has increased by 3,076 students. Needless to say, Davis explained that increased enrollment means increased costs.

He also talked about the newest school in the county, the 500,000 square foot Mt. Juliet High School. "We have to clean, heat, cool, maintain and insure that building," he said.
