MJ, FCS stay perfect

HENDERSONVILLE -- Mt. Juliet overcame a 30-minute delay for rain and lightening to defeat Hendersonville 44-37 in double overtime Friday, Sept. 18. Quarterback Reed Gurchiek’s 10-yard keeper in the final overtime was the difference maker as the Commandos fumbled the ball away on their third down play.

The Golden Bears remained undefeated at 4-0 (2-0 in District 9AAA) while Hendersonville slipped to 2-2 / 1-1. Chris Bazile paced the MJ offensive attack with 136 yards on nine attempts.

Valiant 'Dogs fall at Newberry

From Post staff reports

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Cumberland played tough in the first half, but Newberry posted three second-half TDs en route to a 20-3 win over Cumberland Saturday night at Setzler Field.

The Bulldogs (1-2) limited the home team to just 121 yards of offense in the first half, caused a pair of turnovers and held Newberry on downs once. But the bigger team wore down the Bulldogs in the second half, rushing for 159 yards after the break and three scores to post the victory.

Our defense played a great football game," said CU coach Dewayne Alexander, "I know it’s the best defensive effort since I’ve been here. "
