ST. CATHARINE, KY -- Brian Karahalios drove in two runs with a single in the 10th inning and Daniel Kern got the final three outs for his second save, as Cumberland defeated St. Catharine, Ky., 5-3, in baseball action Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (9-1) won their fifth straight contest, scoring three times in the 10th and staving off a Patriots rally in the bottom of the inning, including a game-ending doubleplay induced by Kern.
The two teams each posted 10 hits and combined to leave 21 men on base on a very cold and windy day. CU starter Peter Taraskevich allowed two runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings, striking out five, before Matt Vance tossed 4.2 shutout frames before running into trouble in the 10th.
In the 10th Troy Frazier walked and Matt Greener singled and with one out, Kris Miller singled to load the bases. Karahalios then singled to centerfield, plating a pair of runs, and Dave Weyer's grounder scored another run for a 5-2 CU advantage.
The Patriots (6-4) answered in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back doubles from Brian Jones and Kaleb Henry, chasing Vance from the game. Kern struck out Adam Blair before allowing a walk to Josh Landers, but Ryan Mangione bounced into a 6-4-3 doubleplay to end the contest.
Brad Krohman (0-1), the fifth of six Patriot hurlers, suffered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings. Vance (1-0) posted the victory, giving up one run on three hits with one strikeout, while Kern earned his second save of the year.
Greener, Miller, Karahalios and David Fanshawe each collected two hits for the Bulldogs, while Miller and Karahalios each had two RBIs. Jones, Blair, Justin Witt and Tyler Mischel all had two hits apiece for SCC.
Both teams scored a run in the second, with Greener and Fanshawe both singling for the Bulldogs, putting runners on the corners. Miller's sacrifice fly put CU ahead, but not for long.
Blair led off the bottom of the inning with a single, stole second, and pinch-runner Greg Tingle scored on a single to left from Mischel.
The Patriots took the lead with a run in the fifth. Witt singled and stole second and Jones reached on an error by first baseman Greg Appleton, putting runners on the corners. Blair doubled one batter later to put SCC ahead, 2-1.
Cumberland tied the game in the eighth, as Fanshawe singled with two outs and pinch-runner Jason Frost scored on a double by Miller.
