LEBANON -- Cory Farris hit a walkoff home run in the eighth inning in the first game and Mike Mandarino allowed one run on two hits in six innings of work in the second contest, as top-ranked Cumberland swept a doubleheader from Missouri Baptist, 3-2 and 7-1, in baseball action Saturday at Ernest L. Stockton Field.
Cumberland plays at home again Sunday, taking on the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) in a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs (2-0) managed just five hits in the opening contest, but Farris’ solo shot to rightfield with one out in the eighth inning gave CU an opening win for the second straight season. Cumberland scored two runs in the second and third innings of the second game, more than enough for Mandarino (1-0), who retired 10 straight in the middle innings and 15 of the first 16 batters of the game.
MT. JULIET -- Post Caya Williams poured in 31 points Friday night as Mt. Juliet completed a perfect 14-0 run through District 9AAA with a 57-51 win over visiting Wilson Central.
The Lady Bears improved to 25-2 on the season and earned the top spot in the upcoming District 9AAA tournament.
Leading 28-15 at intermission, MJ outscored the Lady Wildcats 13-9 in the third period and held off a Central push for the victory with a perfect 8-for-8 effort from the free throw line in the final 40 seconds.
Paige Braugher had 10 points for Mt. Juliet while Emily Gurchiek added nine. Wilson Central (20-3 / 10-3) got 16 points from Ieshia Hassell and 14 from Taylor Peterson.
Friday's nightcap found Mt. Juliet completing the sweep with a 48-39 win.
Guard Caleb Chowbay led the way for the Bears with 19 points while Dee Oldham paced Wilson Central with 14.
