MURFREESBORO — Stephen Gant fired a two-hitter and struck out 12, leading Decatur County to its second straight Class A baseball title with a 6-1 win over Friendship Christian at MTSU’s Reese Smith Jr. Field Friday morning.
Gant also had three RBI as the Panthers (37-2) extended their win streak to 27 consecutive games.
Decatur County outscored its four state tournament opponents 52-9. Friendship (29-9) struggled defensively with four errors.
""The kids overcame a lot this season to to reach this point," said Commander coach John McNeal. "Caleb (Snider) kept 'em off balance early, a good team like that is going to bite you when you make defensive mistakes."
Decatur County took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on second baseman Cale Mitchell’s throwing error. Friendship (29-9) tied it 1-1 on Connor Gaines’ RBI single in the fourth, but ended the inning with the bases loaded.
Decatur County scored three in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead on Gant’s RBI triple and Ryne Bivens’ two-run double.
Gant helped his own cause with a two-run double to increase the Panthers’ lead to 6-1 in the sixth inning.
Dylan Boyd finished 3-for-3 for the Commanders while Kyle Wood had a pair of runs batted in.
