Lady Bears draw Riverdale in Wednesday's state opener

MURFREESBORO -- Mt. Juliet will play Riverdale Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in a quarterfinal game of the BlueCross Girls Basketball Championships at MTSU's Murphy Center.

The Lady Bears (32-4) lost two regular season games to Riverdale (31-3). The winner of the MJ - Riverdale game will take on the winner of the Morristown-East (29-5) vs. Memphis Overton (29-2) game.

The other bracket finds undefeated Clarksville High (36-0) playig Memphis Central (24-7) Thursday at 10 a.m. Lawrence County (26-7) is bracketed paired with undefeated Science Hill (36-0) in Thursday's 11:30 a.m. contest.

Mt. Juliet's four losses this season have come to three teams in the state's final eight -- two losses to Riverdale, one loss to Science Hill in the Greeneville Christmas Tournament and a loss to Clarksville High in the Region 5AAA finals.

CLASS AAA SECTIONAL-- Leading 27-21 at intermission, Mt. Juliet High went on a 14-4 run in the third quarter and defeated Antioch 49-37 in a Class AAA Sectional game Saturday night.

Mt. Juliet improved to 32-4 on the season and earned a berth in next weel's BlueCross Basketball Championships in Murfreesboro. Senior Caya Williams led the Lady Bears with 21 points while Sally McCabe added 10. Sydney Rau came off the bench for seven points.

Jenise Davis had 12 for Antioch and Christina Hill added 11 as AHS ended the season 22-12.

Mid-Continent upends CU 76-70

MAYFIELD, KY -- Mid-Continent University eliminated Cumberland from the TranSouth Conference basketball championships 76-70 Saturday night in the tournament semifinals.

The Bulldogs ended the tournament run 22-9 overall while surprising Mid-Continent advances to the tournament finals next week.

CU's Michael Sweat had 18 in the loss, Johnny Williams added 17 and Jerrell towns chipped in with 14.

Cumberland defeated Bethel 64-59 Thursday at the Floyd Center in the tournament quarterfinals.
