MURFREESBORO - Friendship Christian will play Perry County in Saturday's 6 p.m. finals of the Class A BlueCross Basketball Championships at Murphy Center.
The Commanders (27-3) held on for a 54-51 victory over McEwen in Friday's semifinal, after leading by as many as 17 points in the third quarter.
"We went from boys to men tonight," said Commander coach Cleve Haris, "Our guys wanted this game tonight, they're still hungry."
FCS trailed in the early going 4-0, then pulled ahead 22-21 at half. The black-clad Commanders then went on a third quarter run that saw them take a 44-27 lead over McEwen.
McEwen (31-2) cut the lead to 52-49 with 27 seconds to go, but Mark Sandoval knocked down a pair of free throws for a 54-49 led. McEwen hit a meaningless basket in the final seconds.
Sandoval led FCS with 21 points and 10 rebounds -- five off the offensive glass. Allen Heaston added 13 as eight Commanders broke into the scoring column.
FCS shot 52% from the field (19-of-36) and 57% from the line (16-of-28). McEwen was 17-of-34 from the field (50%) and 14-of-16from the line for 88%.
Perry County reached the finals with a 61-51 win over Lake County in the other semifinal.
