TBI arrests former LPD narcotics detective on misconduct charges

By SABRINA GARRETT
The Wilson Post

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested a former Lebanon Police Detective Monday on misconduct charges. Steven Gordon, 38, was indicted on one count of official misconduct and one count of patronizing prostitution.

Lebanon Police Chief Scott Bowen was first alerted of the alleged misconduct in November 2012, when a former confidential informant, who was not actively working with LPD at the time, came forward with accusations that Gordon had exchanged money for sexual acts.

When you start here, we take an oath of office and ethics training. We hold our officers to a high standard. This is not what we expect of our officers, Bowen said, adding that Gordons actions were a bad decision he made while off duty.

As the chief executive officer of law enforcement in Lebanon Bowen decided to turn the case over to District Attorney Tommy Thompson, who then turned it into TBI.

In Mr. Gordons 13 years at the department we have not had these issues. He comes from a fine family and did excellent work, but once allegations come out we have to handle those situations. We have to have the publics trust in us, Bowen said. In the TBI investigation we discovered policy violations. We suspended him for 30 days pending the outcome of the investigation and during that time he decided to resign.

A release from TBI stated that they were able to substantiate the allegations during the investigations and presented the case to the grand jury last week.

Gordon was booked into the Wilson County Jail Monday and released the same day on a $2,500 bond.

We are disappointed. Our policies dictate conduct on and off duty, Bowen said. The main thing is we have to have the publics trust in us. Police officers are human beings. In some cases make bad decisions and we have to suffer the consequences but his actions do not mirror the professional work that our officers do.
