Chessmen to 'Jam' July 18

This months Jammin with the General to be held on the Lebanon Public Square Thursday, July 18 will feature longtime entertainers, The Chessmen.

The Chessmen, featuring lead singer Tommy Van Atta, have been entertaining audiences since 1964. In 1967, they released a top 40 single, How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) which was number one in Chicago for ten weeks.

The Chessmen have performed for many conventions, concerts, shows corporate parties, major golf tournaments, fundraisers, weddings and receptions.

Columnist Biddle enters HoF

TSWA honors veteran journalist
Veteran journalist and Lebanon resident Joe Biddle was one of three sports writers inducted into the 2013 class of the Tennessee Sports Writers Associations Hall of Fame Thursday evening in ceremonies held at Cumberland University's Bird Chapel.

A native of Johnson City and a US Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, Biddle joined John Adams of the Knoxville News Sentinel, and the late Harold Harris of the Knoxville News Sentinel as the most recent inductees.

LYBA teams state-bound

Nationals down Americans 9-8 in finals
ASHLAND CITY -- Down 8-4 after four innings, the Lebanon Rotary American (11-12) all-stars rallied for a 9-8 win over the Lebanon Rotary National all-stars Thursday night in the District 4 tournament finals.

A young team with only three 12 year-olds, the Americans struck for five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-8 lead. Reliever Luke Bradshaw, who took over for starter Brady Chappell, held the Nationals scoreless the rest of the way.

By playing in the championship game, both LYBA squads earned a spot in next week's Dixie Youth O-Zone State Tournament in Dyersburg.

The Americans earned a shot at the Nationals with a clutch 9-3 victory over Greenbrier earlier Thursday in a loser-out contest.
