Former Mt. Juliet High standout
PULASKI -- Martin Methodist Men's basketball standout Caleb Chowbay has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 5, the league office announced earlier this week.
Chowbay, a senior guard and a graduate of Mt. Juliet High, earned the award after he helped guide the RedHawks to two road victories at Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College and College of Coastal Georgia.
Region 7-AAA individuals loom
FRANKLIN -- Wilson Central went 2-2 and placed in the top eight of the 16-team TSSAA Class AAA state dual wrestling tournament held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3 and 4 at the Williamson County Expo Center. The Wildcats wrapped up the dual season 39-10 overall.
WCHS opened the tournament Friday afternoon with a 39-35 victory over Tullahoma, followed by a 32-31 loss to the eventual third place team Johnson City Science Hill.
Phoenix play at Bethel Wednesday
POPLARVILLE, MS -- Jason Wullenwaber tossed seven innings, Hector Morales posted three hits and Austin Voeller drove in a pair of runs in Cumberland's 9-7 victory over 23rd-ranked William Carey Saturday.
Kyle Allen added a solo homer, his second of the season, and Rayden Sierra collected two hits for the Phoenix (1-2), who ended the opening weekend with a victory after losing 13-4 to No. 9-ranked Missouri Baptist Friday and 16-6 to the Crusaders Thursday.
Phoenix split with Campbellsville
LEBANON -- Diondrey Holt, Jr. scored 24 points and Jamonte Graham tied a career-best with 22 as Cumberland posted a 84-76 victory over Campbellsville Saturday afternoon at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
With the win, the Phoenix improved to 11-10 overall, 4-5 in the Mid-South Condefence headed into a Thursday, Feb. 9 contest at Lindsey Wilson.
Cumberland broke open a 49-all game with 10 consecutive points, as the Phoenix eventually went on a 17-2 run and opened up a 64-51 lead with 11:02 remaining.
Twelve from state of Tennessee
CUmberland University football coach Donnie Suber has announced the signing of 18 players to scholarships for the 2017 season, including 12 from the state of Tennessee.
