Dewaal shoe drive Aug. 8

LEBANON -- Members of the Becky Dewaal Annual Back to School Shoe Drive Planning Committee announce the event will be from 5 until 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 8 at the Mary Chaffin Church Building, 715 Lake Street, Lebanon.

Committee members are John Dewaal, Tameka "Peaches" Owens, Linda Ligon, Jody Webster, Sister Joy Briggs and Josh Lindsey.

The mission statement of the event is "Demonstrating the love of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, with the support of the Lebanon Christian Community by meeting a basic need of inner city children for shoes and clothes at the start of the school year. Matthew 25:34-40."

This is the time of the year that children are returning to school to get a good education. Many of the inner city families are being held together by single parents who are trying to survive off an inadequate, fixed income. Most of the time it will cover just the rent and utilities with none left for much else. This year the economy has made it especially difficult for these families, the committee members said.
