Few home schoolers qualify to try out for local teams

By TOMMY BRYAN, sports editor
Don’t look for a wave of home school students to be making their way to sports teams offered by Wilson County’s six TSSAA member high schools anytime soon.

Following nearly 15 years of study the TSSAA Legislative Council adopted a measure on Wednesday that would allow home school students to try out for traditional school athletic teams — if those students met certain guidelines.

These include registering with a local director of schools or private-school headmaster. Those involved with church-related home-school programs won’t be eligible under these guidelines because they aren’t required to register, making it nearly impossible to monitor their academic progress.
