Bulldogs sweep UVA-Wise
LEBANON -- Anthony Gomez tossed a six-hit shutout in the opener while Richie Seaton and Cory Urquhart combined for eight hits and five RBIs in a doubleheader sweep, as 12th-ranked Cumberland won 4-0 and 6-3 against UVA-Wise, claiming the Mid-South Conference regular season championship Saturday at Stockton Field.
It marked the 20th regular season championship for the Bulldogs (33-13-1, 16-2 Mid-South) under long-time head coach Woody Hunt and the fourth in five seasons for the program.
Cumberland claimed Mid-South regular season titles six straight seasons from 1997-02 during its previous tenure in the league.
LEBANON -- Cumberland scored six two-out runs in the sixth inning with a solo homer from Richie Seaton and a two-run single by Daniel Harrison, as the 12th-ranked Bulldogs overcame a three-run deficit en route to a 9-7 victory over UVA-Wise in the first game of a weekend series at Stockton Field Friday afternoon.
Cumberland (31-13-1, 14-2 Mid-South) sent 11 batters to the plate in the six-run inning, which started with a two-out solo homer to rightcenter by Seaton.
Seven consecutive batters reached thereafter, with Cory Urquharts two-run single to right tying the contest at six. Craig Monson drove in a run with a single through the right side before Harrisons two-run single to right gave the Bulldogs a 9-6 advantage.
