To the Editor:Wouldn’t it be great if we begin growing at the least possible expense to the other and slow the painful attack on the existence of life? Instead we’re funding the most enormous killing machine the world has ever known with 53 cents of every taxpayer’s dollar going to the military. But of course the fiscal profits go Halliburton, Blackwater, Wall Street, Big Oil and the rest of the corporate guns for hire, while studies place the cost of the Iraq invasion at $6,000 billion with a million-and-a-half people killed thus far. Then there’s the millions misplaced, injured and starving.Meanwhile, as the unending war or terror continues, more as less as the battle between good and evil, the ultimate cost to the whole of things is beyond our comprehension. For in all practical purposes, as a whole, you and I, them, they, we, and all else is the other. In spite of, it is the “logical conclusion” of many that corporations are of an intelligent design. That the corporations, without question or regulation, are the ones that turn the wheels, provide the jobs and are to be lifted up above all other, regardless of the ill effects produced. Yet in retrospect of what’s been demonstrated and proved by history stands up as facts and underlies an eternal truth – bigotry and excessive power creates an undeniable disaster in time that all must bear. Whereto the killing and destruction of war does not work, for there is no end, only its perpetuity. For as history shows World War I was to be the Great War, the war to end all wars, yet the wars continue at an unending pace and the way the tide is turning total extinction is most plausible. Thus it is becoming apparent that the intelligent design system is flawed from the outset and does not hold up its end of the bargain, i.e., wisdom is not of intelligence without justice and respect. And likewise universal reverence and unity can only work with the virtuous feeling of one to the other, not of subjugation with huge profits bestowed to the elect and misery to all other, thereby provoking more chaos than unity. Now there’s the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill devastating the origin of the food chain which sustains all life. And that is life in general, the birds, bees, trees, “little fishes,” crabs and shrimp, and puts us all in the same little boat on an overall toxic sea. Or as a lovely young lady from Mt. Juliet said today, “We Are All Palestinians,” as she was preparing to go to the West Bank to help comfort the many children who are victims of Israel’s massacre of Palestine. And all the while it is overlooked that Israel is the sixth most powerful superpower in the world being supported by the omnipotent number one the almighty U.S. But sadly the dying are the least of them to which any and all other area becoming. And I thought how ironic for I had just heard the Rev. James Lawson say last night, “pray with your legs and act.” Though not for profit, but in virtue of the other. So is it any wonder it was written in Aramaic, Hebrew or Greek approximately 1,900 years ago, “Blessed are the peacemakers,” for it is by these words a calm is found through the trail of tears.Robert KnowlesLebanon
