I don't care
Fifty-one degrees at daylight and this is December 6. What is that all about? My owl is complaining about the weather and even though I am sure, it will eventually get light enough to see, it is sure taking a long time. I like owls. The Indians, who we are now told to call Native Americans, view owls as harbingers of trouble. I don’t care. ...Dec 20 -
The cold can kill you
We all know you can freeze to death and we have all heard of hypothermia. To put it simply, that is when the body core gets so cold, basic metabolism and body functions do not work. What is cold enough? Would you believe 95 degrees? True dat. When your body core gets to 95 degrees and stays there long enough, you start shivering and possibly having ...Dec 10 -
Memories of the Parker-Hale
I take my time and slip the Parker-Hale .308 off the hook. Lord, the hunts I have had with that gun. I position the Steady-Rest against my hip and nestle the stock into my shoulder. I remember to slip the damn glasses off my nose and settle the crosshairs just behind her shoulder. ...Nov 30 -
Well, now what?
Every Thanksgiving, health permitting, I go hunting for an hour or so before the eatin and greetin begins. I suspect this year will be no different. Last year, on a beautiful TG morning, I killed a double, a small buck and a doe. It set the stage for a great Thanksgiving, much better than the one five years ago when I was in a coma in the Vanderbil ...Nov 21 -
Rifle season opens Nov. 17
Tennessee hunters trade one long gun for another Saturday. Muzzleloader season closes Friday and rifle season opens Saturday. Of course, during the rifle season, hunters may use bow, muzzleloader or rifle. Just be sure and wear the required hunter orange. The bag limit is still three does a day and a total of three bucks for season here in Unit L. ...Nov 16 -

The strings are all too visible behind ''Gatsby'
By PATRICK HALLSpecial to The Wilson Post Let me preface by saying I consider The Great Gatsby to be one of the greatest American novels ever written, and I never expected Baz Luhrmann’s film to live up to that standard. With that being said, Luhrmann definitely “gets it,” and his film is a decent adaptation, depicting Gatsby’s world vividly, ...May 10 -
'Lincoln' to lead Academy Award winners Sunday
By PATRICK HALLSpecial to The Wilson Post The 85th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, and while I spent quite some time mulling over the most deserving films, I am settling on the fact that “Lincoln” will be the winner in the big categories, despite the fact that I don’t see it as the best of the nominees. Directed by Steven Spielberg, and ...Feb 21 -
‘Silver Linings’ is beautifully honest
By PATRICK HALLSpecial to The Wilson Post Best Picture nominee “Silver Linings Playbook” is a genuine and emotional look into the lives of two individuals, mostly described as “crazy,” but the truth is, the film succeeds in pulling back the curtain on all our lives and the truth that we all have flaws and depend on those around us to love, forgiv ...Feb 13 -
'Beasts' a beautiful tale of courage and love
By PATRICK HALLSpecial to The Wilson Post Captivating and beautiful, while also at times, littered with grit and destruction, “Beasts of the Southern Wild” is a fantastic film tribute to those who chose to stay the course and not leave their homes during Hurricane Katrina, and the performance by its lead actress is downright amazing. “Beasts” ...Feb 06 -
'Zero Dark Thirty' is visceral, tense, phenomenal
By PATRICK HALL Special to The Wilson Post From voices crying out in terror on Sept. 11, 2001, to SEAL Team Six sifting through computer hard drives and a Central Intelligence Agency operative confirming his identity, “Zero Dark Thirty” is a tense, heart-pounding and thrilling look at the search for Osama bin Laden. Director Kathryn Bigelow’s f ...Jan 11 -

Little Boa Peep
There is something to be said for facing your fears. Now, I am not advocating skydiving if you are scared of heights or visiting a beekeeper if you are deathly allergic to bee stings – but every once in a while a healthy dose of bravery can do the mind and body good. I experienced this last year when I wrote about Safari Greg visiting the Leban ...Jun 05 -
Mother of Mine
Walking through Kroger today I noticed an Almay makeup display. The sign featured Hollywood’s beloved Mother/Daughter duo Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson, who is the company’s current spokesperson. The advertisement reminded ladies to remember their own moms this Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 12). “All the best makeup secrets come from my mom,” Kate was q ...May 04 -
Spring Clean Closet
If you are like me you have about five articles of clothing that you wear on a regular basis – and about 50 that don’t fit, are collecting dust or have their tags still on them. I realized just how much stuff was piling up this week when I bought a black fringe bikini at Target. I came home and tried on my newest purchase. “I am so happy to have a ...May 02 -

Pregnant women are NOT “fat”
“Fat” is such an ugly word. I hate it. Anytime I hear someone call another person “fat” – I cringe over how cruel it sounds. Sure, some people are really thin. Some people are overweight. And some people are in between. But you know what? It takes all shapes and sizes to keep this world moving – and shame on you for berating another person! ...Apr 22 -

Politics, religion and breastfeeding
By BECKY ANDREWSWilson Living Magazine Besides religion, politics and sex there’s one more hot button issue that should be added to that list of taboo topics never discussed in mixed company. Lipscomb to the OVC?
Lipscomb was hesitant to follow Nashville neighbor Belmont from the NAIA to the NCAA. At the time, longtime Lipscomb basketball coach Don Meyer didn’t believe it was in the school’s best interest to move to the NCAA. It was basically a three-year move to be fully vested at the NCAA level. And Meyer was Lipscomb’s winningest basketball coach. Bel ...May 22 -

33 years -- a long time between bass
The sun was just breaking the trees when Robert Pitman tried to make the cast. A broken finger on his casting hand made using the antique rod and reel almost impossible. Nevertheless, the lure, a true antique, covered with real frog skin hit right on target. We were supposed to be having a fishing contest, he with antique gear, I with my usual. Tha ...Jun 18 -

The snow has slowed to an occasional flurry and the wind is dropping to bearable levels. What happened? Somewhat of a rant
On a good day, it could be some of the best smallmouth fishing you are going to find. Anyway, it use to be. On a bad day, it sucks. Seems to be a lot more of those suckin days lately. For sure, with rare exceptions, it has gone downhill from a fishing standpoint. It is a puzzle and it can be heartbreaking. Go three hours without a strike, then, in ...Jun 05 -

Edie Falco next portrays a misbehaving goddess
Dear Ken: Edie Falco is great on “Nurse Jackie” and was superb as Carmela on “The Sopranos.” Has she made many movies? Our Feathered Friends #238
I couldn't wait for last Thursday to get here so I could go birding with Karen Franklin and her children, Anna and Nick.
