Wilson County Director of Schools Mike Davis said action on a plan to establish a Lebanon Middle School in the building which formerly belonged to Lebanon High School will be deferred until after the first of the year.

Davis presented the plan, which relocated middle school aged children from Southside Elementary, Tuckers Crossroads Elementary and Carroll Oakland Elementary into the proposed Lebanon Middle School, at Monday nights Board of Education meeting. The plan did not proceed due to late of motion.

Davis said a work session will be held in December to broach the subject once again before their January 2013 meeting. We decided that coming back in December with additional information would be the best way to go forward, he said. We have to consider these options adding on to Tuckers, Carroll Oakland and Southside or having a brand new middle school.

Davis also said that the plan to convert newer portions of the old Lebanon High School facility, which were constructed in the last 20 years, into a middle school is not a new idea. That has been in the facility plan since before I got here six years ago. The building was built in about three different phases. The portion constructed in 1954 would be demolished, he said. The old building would not be utilized; however, the front section has seven modern science labs, two computer labs and 27 classrooms. I dont see anything wrong with using portions less than 20 years old.

Davis said that right now Wilson County students are moving toward common core curriculum like a runaway freight train and that having tools like the science and computer labs would help children prepare for the future with hands on learning.

Davis added that they are currently spending an estimated $20,000 in utility costs per month for the building. This is a building that we are not using. We are spending around a quarter of a million dollars every year for a building we are not utilizing. Something needs to be done, he said.
