Broken chipper delays service for some

Brush piles at curbs in some parts of town are awaiting a city crew to come run them through a chipper and haul the wood away.

Commissioner of Public Works Jeff Baines said some citizens may have a longer wait than usual because a chipper is in for repair.

“Ideally, we pick up once a week, but right now we’re having some equipment problems,” Baines said.

He also explained that sometimes residents are not eligible to have the city chipper service clean up the debris on their property.

“If the homeowner contracts with a tree removal service, the tree removers are supposed to haul away the brush,” he said. The city can’t take the large amounts of brush from those kinds of projects, Baines added.

He did point out that it is possible with the current financial issues in the city he may not have enough manpower to continue the weekly service, but he won’t know about that until the city budget is complete.
