Burglaries committed by organized group

He explained local car burglaries include reports of stolen electronics such as stereos, GPS units, cell phones or tablets and other items of value like golf clubs. However, the chief said the Aug. 18 burglaries hinted at a more elaborate criminal operation.

Bowen said around the same time as the Aug. 18 robberies, other burglaries of the same type occurred in Belle Meade. He said the department has been in close contact with the Belle Meade Police Department about these crimes.

In one case, someone wrote checks from our victim in Lebanon to one of the victims in Belle Meade, Bowen said.

The checks were reportedly written in Knoxville, and Bowen said the thieves used the Belle Meade victims personal identification to cash the checks. He said the items being stolen are all used for fraud and identity theft.

We know there is a connection there, he said, referring to the local burglaries and Belle Meade thefts. They are specifically looking for wallets, checkbooks and photo IDs or Social Security cards.

While the LPD is working on the case and is in communication with other law enforcement agencies, Bowen said local residents should protect themselves and take no chances. He said even if the car has an alarm, it takes very little time for a criminal to break a window and snatch a purse or wallet.

Dont leave your wallet, purse or pocketbooks in the car and definitely not in sight, Bowen said.

He encouraged individuals to take their wallets and purses or other valuables into fitness centers with them and use lockers or other secure storage places within the center.
