CU sweeps Lyon College
A little bit of good weather, clutch hitting sprinkled in with some solid pitching performances can sure lift the spirit.
Cumberland's baseball team is a case in point.
The Phoenix improved to 7-3 on the season after a weekend sweep of visiting Lyon College (Ark.) at Stockton Field.
After taking the first two games of the series by scores of 9-3 (Friday) and 8-3 (Saturday), Coach Woody Hunt's crew scratched out a 4-3 victory in Saturday afternoon's second game of the doubleheader.
Tyler Yorko's RBI infield single in the bottom of the seventh drove in the game winner from third base.
"It was just a dribbler to the shortstop," Coach Hunt said, "but Tyler hustled down the line and beat the throw. We needed something like that."
Mt. Juliet sophomore Curt Hoppe (2-0) went the distance for the decision giving up two runs in the first and then just an unearned run in the fourth.
The righthander allowed only two hits, walked four and struck out eight in his second career start.
"Our pitching was good over the weekend, I'm really proud of our staff," Coach Hunt said. "We showed a lot of resolve that last game. Our guys fought hard. They had that desire to win -- that's a big improvement over the previous weekend."
Cumberland 8, Lyon 3
Cumberland won Saturday's opener 8-3 as Nick McGrew went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs.
Stephen Fischer (3-0) tossed his third straight complete game in the opener, allowing three unearned runs on seven hits with one walk and a career-best eight strikeouts.
He was provided just about all the offense needed in the first inning with a two-run single from Ryan Dickison and a passed ball that plated another run.
Cumberland added single runs in the second, third and fifth innings before McGrew's second homer of the season, a two-run shot, made it 8-1.
