Trooper Chad Bilbrey of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said in his report that Mattes vehicle crossed the center line and struck Steeds pickup truck head-on. Both vehicles came to a rest in the westbound lane.
Mattes was pronounced dead at the scene. Steed, a 2013 graduate of Lebanon High, was injured and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.
Bilbrey said it was unknown if alcohol or drugs played a part in the accident, but blood alcohol and drug tests were to be performed.
