WISE, Va. -- On a cold afternoon in the hills of western Virginia, Cumberland’s defense brought the heat. Sparked by a violent front seven, the Bulldogs beat the University of Virginia’s College at Wise 27-20 Saturday at Carl Smith Stadium.

Coach Dewayne Alexander’s Bulldogs improved to 3-4 on the season while Wise fell to 4-4.

While there were many standouts on the defensive side of the football, perhaps none stood taller for CU than did outside linebacker Todd Holman.

The Sparta native picked off two Cavalier passes, was credited with a sack and a half along with 1.5 tackles for loss -- and finished with five stops on the day. For his efforts he was voted the Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

"Our guys chased the football and played hard today," Coach Alexander said after the game. "I am as proud of our guys for this win as any win we’ve ever had because we came in here and played hard. They practiced hard all week and they played with a sense of purpose. We had some adversity, a couple of wingbacks twisted their ankles, some tough calls went against us, but we were able to overcome those things.

The Cumberland defense limited UVA-Wise to negative 51 yards rushing as the Bulldogs picked up their second straight victory.

The CU defense, after allowing just 52 yards on the ground a week ago, sacked UVA-Wise quarterback Brad Robbins 10 times for a loss of 58 yards

The Bulldogs racked up 432 total yards of offense, including 296 on the ground, in the contest -- clicking off 79 offensive snaps.

Quarterback Curt Bureau, playing for the first time in three weeks, went 10-of-16 for 136 yards.

Fullback Mitch McChurch rushed for 151 yards and a pair of touchdowns and with a 27-20 decision at a chilly Carl Smith Stadium. McChuch was voted the MSC Offensive Player of the Week.

McChurch and Tim McCord combined to rush 35 times for 210 yards from the fullback position.

"Our fullbacks and the offensive line took the game over there in the fourth quarter," Alexander said.

Cumberland returns home Saturday, Oct. 24 as the Bulldogs close out their home schedule with a matchup against Belhaven College at 1:30 p.m. Senior Day activities will be held during pregame.
