Cumberland strands nine baserunners -
LEBANON -- Brescia's Alex Flock hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs while Logan Wilkerson tossed five strong innings as the Bearcats posted a 5-4 victory over Cumberland Tuesday, March 21 at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

Brescia (4-16) broke a six-game losing streak with the win, with Zach Johnson plating the winning run with a two-out single in the seventh.

Johnson was on base four times in the game with a pair of singles and two walks.

Flock doubled home Johnson in the first and his three-run homer in the third put Brescia ahead, 4-1.

"After Sunday, I thought we would be able to build off those two wins," said CU coach Woody Hunt. "I don't know if we were ready to play -- again the big inning cost us. We weren't ready, prepared to battle. We're not in very good shape right now."

The Phoenix (16-16) battled back with an RBI groundout from Hector Morales and a run-scoring double by Austin Voeller. Kyle Allen's solo homer to leadoff the sixth knotted the game at four, but the Bearcats regained the lead in the seventh.

Omar Yepez reached on an error to start the frame and went to second on a sac bunt by Brenden Williams. With two outs Johnson singled to center, plating Yepez for a 5-4 Brescia edge.

Wilkerson worked five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with three walks in his first start of the season. Zack McDonald (1-0) allowed the tying run but Brescia went back ahead in the next inning, picking up the wind despite giving up one run on two hits in one inning.

Negal Laguna tossed two perfect innings for the save, striking out one. Johnson and Flock accounted for four of the team's six hits in the victory.

Sam Eichler (1-2) suffered the loss for Cumberland (16-16), allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits. He walked three and struck out two in seven innings. Evan Flener struck out two in two perfect innings of relief for CU.

Voeller continued his hot-hitting with a 3-for-4 effort and Austin Krajnak added two doubles and two runs scored. Cumberland stranded nine baserunners in the loss, including a lineout from Allen with two runners on base in the seventh.

The Bearcats got on the board first after a leadoff single in the first by Johnson, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Wetzel. Flock then doubled to rightcenter, giving Brescia an early lead.

Cumberland tied the game in the bottom of the first thanks to an error that allowed Steven Hollis to reach. Krajnak then doubled to center, but Hollis was thrown out trying to score. Morales followed with an RBI single to left, evening the score at one.

Brescia regained the lead in the third when Johnson drew a leadoff walk and Wetzel singled to right, putting runners on the corners. Flock then belted a curve ball down the rightfield line, keeping it just inside the foul pole for a three-run homer and a 4-1 Bearcats advantage.

Hollis singled with one out in the fifth and Krajnak followed with a line drive double off the leftfield wall. Morales plated a run with a hard grounder up the middle and Voeller's double down the rightfield line scored another, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

Allen's solo blast down the leftfield line, his third home run of the year, to leadoff the sixth tied the game at four, but that was all for the Phoenix.

Cumberland is scheduled to play at Mid-South Conference rival Lindsey Wilson Thursday and Friday.
