CU baseball honored by Tenn Sports Hall of Fame

The Bulldogs won five straight games in Lewiston, ID to claim the 2010 NAIA Baseball National Championship, the program’s second national title in six years under longtime head coach Woody Hunt -- who will be honored today as NAIA “National Coach of the Year”. The Bulldogs closed out the 2010 season winning 29 of its last 30 games and finished 58-9 overall. 

Other amateur teams to be honored include: Union University women’s basketball for  claiming its second consecutive NAIA Basketball national title and Lee University for winning its third-straight NAIA women’s soccer national championship.

Three major league pitchers will be honored as Professional Athletes of the Year. They include:

* Murfreesboro native David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays. A Blackman High standout and former Vanderbilt All-American was the first American League pitcher to reach 10 wins. Price finished with a 2.72 ERA and a record of 19-6. The was the AL starter in the MLB All-Star game.

* Nashville native and knuckleball pitcher R.A. Dickey of the New York Mets. The former University of Tennessee great went 11-9 with an ERA of 2.84 wit two complete games.

* Shelby County native Matt Cain, who went 13-11 with an ERA of 3.14 for the World Champion San Francisco Giants. His post-season totals were three games, a 2-0 record, 21.1 innings pitched, and 13 strikeouts. Earlier this week Cain was named “Sportsman of the Year” in his hometown of Memphis by the Commercial Appeal.
