Marcelo repeats as Player of the Year
Cumberland’s Bill McCormick was named the Mid-South Conference Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year and Antonio Manuel Marcelo received MSC Player of the Year honors in a vote of league coaches during the conference championships in Georgetown, Ky.
McCormick and Marcelo were honored for the second straight year with the awards after helping Cumberland claim the Mid-South Conference regular season championship, the fourth title for the Bulldogs in the MSC but first since 1999.
Cumberland went undefeated in league action, defeating Lindsey Wilson, 5-4, earlier this month on the road. The Blue Raiders are a perennial Top 10 team and had won at least a share of the MSC regular season championship for 11 straight years.
The NAIA Championships are set for May 12-17 in Mobile, Ala., and CU will find out who and when it plays in the national tournament on Tuesday, May 6.
Marcelo has compiled a 15-5 singles record and 12-9 doubles mark this academic year. The Cascais, Portugal, native is 4-2 against ranked opponents in singles, including a 6-4, 6-3, victory over Lindsey Wilson’s 36th-ranked Edberg Espinoza this past weekend and a pair of wins versus Xavier University’s Kyle Montrel (currently No. 16 in the nation) and also Graceland University’s Birkir Gunnarson (currently No. 11 nationally).
