Special teams player of the Week
Cumberland University's Matthew Alter earned Mid-South Conference West Division Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Monday after booting the game-winning 28-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of CU's 17-14 victory over the University of the Cumberlands.

The Montgomery, Ala., native missed from 24 yards in the third period, hitting the right upright after a high snap on the play.

In the final quarter Cumberland was whistled for a false start on 4th-and-goal at the one yard line and as Alter tried a 23-yard attempt, the Phoenix jumped again, moving the ball back five more yards.

He converted the 28-yarder with no problems and is now 2-for-6 in his career on field goal attempts.

Cumberland heads to NCAA Division II Mississippi College this Saturday for a 7 p.m. kickoff before returning home October 1 to face the University of Pikeville.
