Road Runner Booster Classic
Fresh from a narrow victory at Bethel University Wednesday, the Cumberland men's basketball team returns to action today and Saturday in the Dalton, Georgia Road Runner Booster Club Classic.
Coach Lonnie Thompson's squad (6-5) take on Carver College today at 5 p.m. and host Dalton State College Saturday, Dec. 17 at 3 p.m.
Cumberland 87, Bethel Univ. 85
McKENZIE -- Diondrey Holt, Jr. scored 20 points leading four players in double figures as Cumberland pulled out a narrow 87-85 win over Bethel Wednesday at the Crips Arena.
CU's Rhyan Townes netted a season high 17 points and eight rebounds while Jamonte Graham collected 16 points and Ronell Abaekobe added 13 as Cumberland rallied to improve to 6-5 on the season -- winning for the third straight outing.
The Phoenix trailed the entire second half up until 2:57 remained in the game when Delaryn Dodd hit two good free throws to knot the game at 79.
Holt made a 2-pointer to give the Cumberland their first lead of the second period and Townes went two-for-two at the line with .24 seconds left to secure the win.
In the first half the Phoenix led 10-9 but Bethel ripped off 12 straight unanswered points to take a 21-10 lead.
Wildcat Justice Scott scored 10 of the 12 points.
Bethel went on to lead at halftime 44-39.
Both teams shot the ball well with Bethel shooting 50 percent while Cumberland shot 54 percent from the field.
Both teams had 35 field goals.
CU hit seven three-pointers while the Wildcats had six.
The Phoenix hit 10-of-16 free throws while Bethel hit 9-of-16 from the line.
Both teams had 10 turnovers.
