Phoenix tops Oakwood 69-68
Fresh off a thrilling 69-69 victory over Oakwood Tuesday at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center, the Cumberland University men's basketball team returns to action this weekend in the Huntington University Classic this weekend in Huntington, Ind.
Coach Lonnie Thompson's squad is scheduled to play NAIA Division II top-ranked University of St. Francis [IN] Friday and classic host Huntington on Saturday.
On Tuesday, CU's Jamonte Graham (Nashville) drove the length of the floor in the final six seconds, hitting a layup plus the foul shot with 0.2 seconds remaining in the season-opener.
Cumberland shot just 36 percent from the field, missing chance after chance around the basket on layups and offensive rebounds.
CU outrebounded the Ambassadors, 52-26, including 28 offensive boards and 20 first-chance points.
The Phoenix led by three at the half and a 10-1 spurt gave the home team a 10-point edge with 13:17 remaining.
Reid Pierce (Murfreesboro) made two free throws and a jumper plus the foul before a basket by DeQuan Bond (Antioch).
Pierce added another old-fashioned 3-point play for the 49-39 lead, but the Ambassadors answered quickly with a 9-0 stretch of its own.
Cumberland made just 10-of-35 field goal attempts but the Ambassadors committed 13 fouls and CU hit 10-of-13 at the foul line.
Thirteen different players saw action for the Phoenix and 11 found the scoring column.
Pierce finished with 11 points while Joseph Wilbert (Nashville) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
