CU now ranked No. 5

Cumberland moved up two spots to fifth in the fifth edition of the 2011 NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll announced Tuesday by the national office. The Bulldogs have won 13 straight games and 20 of the last 21 contests since March 22.

Cumberland (39-12, 17-4) concludes the regular season this week at home against Mid-Continent University, hosting a doubleheader Thursday at 1 p.m. and a single game Friday at 2 p.m.

The Bulldogs lead the TranSouth Conference standings by one game over Trevecca Nazarene and two games over Union University. The top six teams in the final conference standings will play in next week’s TranSouth Championships starting Monday at Fesmire Field on the Union campus in Jackson, Tenn.

Embry-Riddle is ranked No. 1 in this week’s poll, their first No. 1 ranking since April 20, 2005 poll. The Eagles, coached by former Bulldog player and assistant coach Randy Stegall, are riding a 14-game winning streak.

Lee University, whom is the Bulldogs defeated last week, 7-4, in Cleveland, Tenn., is ranked fourth, while LSU-Shreveport is No. 9 this week. Cumberland has also played Missouri Baptist (11th), Brewton-Parker (16th), Belhaven University (22nd) and Trevecca Nazarene (24th) this season, compiling a 7-6 record against teams ranked in this week’s Top 25.
