CU softball falls in MSC finals

The Bulldogs committed four errors in the opener leading to six of LWCs 10 runs in the contest, including three unearned runs in the first and one each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Jessica Roper collected three hits and Allison Blackwood, Kaleigh Pearce and Devon Jamerson each added two, but Cumberland was just 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine on base.Allison Hart was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored for the Blue Raiders, including a two-run homer in the first inning that gave LWC a 3-0 lead. Egiazarova added two hits and two RBIs in the contest as well.Two-run homers for Egiazarova in the second and third innings was more than enough for Hood, who struck out 11 and allowed just six baserunners two hits and an error plus the three hits.The Blue Raiders started quickly with three runs in the top of the first in the opener, all unearned, after Antoinette Jenkins reached on an error to start the game. She went to third on a sacrifice by Andrea Whalen and scored on Madison Scotts two-out single to center. Hart then blasted the first pitch over the wall in rightcenter for a 3-0 edge after a half inning.The Bulldogs got a run back in the second and had a chance for more.

Sydney Broderick singled with one out and Pearce followed with a double to leftcenter. Jamersons single to right scored a run, but Natalie Garcia struck out and Megan Lavery grounded back to the pitcher, stranded runners on the corners.Lindsey Wilson came right back in the third with three more runs, starting with a one-out single from Kristina Krupinski. Hart doubled to leftcenter with two outs, plating a run, and Travatia Bowden followed with an infield single. Bowden and Hart pulled off the double steal, scoring another run, before an RBI double from Egiazarova gave the Blue Raiders a 6-1 advantage.Roper laced a line drive homer to leftcenter in the bottom of the inning, her team-leading ninth of the season, cutting the deficit to 6-2.

In the fourth LWCs Jordan Gilland led off with a double to leftcenter and Jenkins reached on an infield hit, putting runners on the corners. Whelan lined back to the pitcher and Caroline Curran threw to first to double off Jenkins, but the throw was wild and got away, allowing Gilland to score for a 7-2 LWC lead.Hart beat out an infield single to start the fifth but was caught between first and second after beginning to steal and then changing her mind, but Jamersons throw to second was high, allowing her to reach safely. She went to third on a groundout by Bowden and scored on a pop out down the rightfield line by Egiazarova.Blackwood and Roper both singled in the bottom of the inning for CU and a grounder off the bat of Kacy Hobbs hit off the gloves of the pitcher and second baseman and ended up in rightcenter, scoring a run, but Cumberland missed another chance to put up a big inning. Shawnee Kirk struck out and Broderick grounded out to end the inning, the sixth and seventh runners left on base for the Bulldogs.Gilland led off the sixth with a single to center and Jenkins reached on another infield hit. The throw to first was wild again and Gilland scored on the play. Whelan followed with an RBI double for a 10-3 LWC advantage.Cumberland got three runs back in the bottom of the inning, starting with singles from Pearce and Jamerson. Garcia then singled to right, plating a run, and after a fielders choice, Blackwood singled up the middle, off the glove of Cara Law, plating another run. Roper grounded out to second, but Lavery came all the way around to score from second on the play, beating the throw with a nice slide to the backside of the plate, cutting the deficit to 10-6.Hood got the final five outs of the game in relief of Law, coming in with two runners aboard and one out after the Bulldogs cut the deficit to four. She got a groundout and a strikeout to end the inning and allowed just a single in the seventh to finish off the LWC victory.Courtney Maynard (19-9) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits in three innings. Curran threw the other four frames, giving up four runs, one earned, on seven hits.Law (11-2) posted the victory, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. She walked two and struck out four.

LWC started quickly in the second game as well, with Jenkins hitting a triple to the wall in rightfield to leadoff the contest. She scored on Whelans single down the leftfield line for an early 1-0 Blue Raiders edge.Bowden led off the second inning with a single to left before a towering drive to left from Egiazarova that just cleared the wall, giving Lindsey Wilson a 3-0 advantage after two innings.The same scene unfolded in the third, with Bowden singling to leftcenter before a line drive two-run homer by Egiazarova put the Blue Raiders ahead, 5-0.

Jenkins blooped a double just over the third base bag to start the fourth and scored on Whelans single to center for a 6-0 edge.

Blackwood took the loss in the second game for CU, giving up five runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings.
