CU softball sweeps MMU

The Bulldogs held a 1-0 lead throughout four innings before the bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth. Devon Jamerson started things off by reaching on a RedHawk fielding error and advanced to second after Natalie Garcia was hit by a pitch. Sydney Brodericks single through the right side advanced both runners, with only one out for CU. Allison Blackwood singled up the middle, advancing Broderick to second and allowing both Jamerson and Garcia to score for a 3-0 CU advantage.Jessica Roper came through with her team-leading fourth home run on the season, bringing Broderick and Blackwood across the plate to push the lead to 6-0.Hobbs singled through the left side with two outs on the board and Sarah Murray followed with her own single, and both runners advanced a base due to a fielding error, placing Hobbs on third and Murray on second. Jamersons double to right center sent Hobbs and Murray home to run-rule the RedHawks 8-0 in five innings and end the game.Martin Methodists Dharianna Familia (4-2) threw the loss with 12 hits, one walk and two strikeouts.The second game began with each team only able to get through three batters in the first inning. In the second inning, MMCs Alley Benefield sent a solo shot over center field to put her team up 1-0 in the top of the first.Hobbs responded with a home run of her own, her third on the year, to put CU up 2-1 by batting in Broderick who was on first by way of a single through the left side.The RedHawks were able to tie things up on a Veronika Fukunishi double up the middle at the start of the third, allowing Courtney Grooms to cross the plate for a 2-2 ballgame.In the bottom of the third, Jamerson doubled to left center and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Garcia walked, Megan Lavery reached first and advanced all the way to third base on a throwing error by the pitcher, with Jamerson and Garcia both scoring for a 4-2 edge.A double to right center by Blackwood then brought Lavery around for another score, and Brodericks single up the middle scored Blackwood to put CU up 6-2.The RedHawks began a furious comeback in the top of the seventh beginning with Jamsine Crenshaw making it to first after being hit by a Caroline Curran pitch. Grooms then doubled to right center, advancing Crenshaw to third with zero outs. Morgan May nicely placed a bunt between catcher Broderick and Curran, but the throw was deeply overthrown to first base, bringing in both Crenshaw and Grooms to close CUs lead to 6-4.May advanced to second on a passed ball and Chae Ellis made it to first on a walk. Benefield struck out for the second out of the inning, and Dana Winfrey was sent it to pinch hit, getting to base by way of a walk, advancing Ellis to second and May to third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Megan Anderson grounded out to second base, giving the Bulldogs the victory.Jessica Lozano (2-2) earned the win for CU with two earned runs, four hits and six strikeouts.Emily Robb (4-7) suffered the loss for MMC, giving up three earned runs, five hits, one walk and striking out one batter.Cumberland travels to the University of Rio Grande for a Mid-South Conference doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
