CU volleyball places 2nd in tourney

LEBANON -- Cumberland's volleyball team posted three wins in four matches over the weekend at the CU Lady Volleydawg Tourney, coming back from two games down to defeat Pikeville Friday night and then taking care of Brescia and the University of the Cumberlands, 3-0, at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

Katie Ball, Taylor Denney and Joni Simpson were all voted to the All-Tournament Team, as CU (13-8, 3-2 TranSouth) placed second in the tournament. The team's only loss was a 3-0 decision to Union, the tourney winner.

Denney, a sophomore from Cookeville, recorded 122 assists in the four matches, while Ball, a senior from Southside, Ala., collected 50 kills for the weekend. Simpson, a sophomore from Sparta, had 15 kills.

Tracy Smallwood recorded 50 kills, and Katie Coomes and Amanda Twomey collected 36 and 28 digs, respectively.

The Bulldogs face a tough upcoming week, traveling to Freed-Hardeman Tuesday and Trevecca Thursday before hosting Mid-Continent at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center at 6 p.m. Friday.
