LEBANON -- Sarah Collins scored 21 points and Courtney Atkinson added 15, both in their Cumberland debuts, and the Bulldogs scored 36 points off turnovers in a 74-39 season-opening victory over Fisk University in womens basketball action Monday at the Floyd Center.
Collins netted the first eight points of the game for the Bulldogs, as CU jumped out to 14-2 and 20-5 leads in the first nine minutes of the contest.
Casie Cowan and Madison Pavan hit 3-pointers later in the half and the Bulldogs handed out 13 assists on 16 field goals en route to a 40-16 advantage at intermission.
With added depth at nearly every position Cumberland also debuted a high-pressure defense, extending to full-court and half-court at times.
Fisk committed 30 turnovers in the contest, with the Bulldogs scoring 36 points off those miscues.
Collins and Katie Smith, who scored nine points, also led a big inside scoring attack for CU, as the Bulldogs posted 46 points in the paint.
Samantha Harper came off the bench to post a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Simona Newman led Fisk with 11 points and Tiffany Wynn added nine.
Cumberland (1-0) plays Georgetown College and the University of Rio Grande in the Habitat Classic at Georgetown College this weekend.
Fridays game against the host Tigers starts at 7 p.m. Central Time and Saturdays contest begins at 2 p.m.
