There's a new dentist in town. Back in his hometown.

The Wilson Post caught up with Dr. Jim Newman and his staff at Newman Dental Associates this week.

Dr. Newman discussed his educational experience, which includes graduating from Lebanon High School in 2008 before attending Lipscomb University and earning degrees in biology and chemistry. He then continued on to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis for his dental degree, graduating with high honors in 2016. There, he received the Dean's Award for Clinical Excellence.

The posh dental studio, located at 337 S. Cumberland Street in Lebanon, has a deep history in Wilson County - as does the Johnson/Newman family. The building was originally the National Guard Armory.

Dr. Newman is a fourth-generation local business owner, beginning with Ligon & Bobo Funeral Home, Barbara's Dress Shop, Randy's Barber Shop, On-Call Medical and Pharmacy and Newman Appraisal.

The building most recently housed On-Call Medical and Pharmacy, owned by Newman's mother, Lisa Newman, aunt, Dr. Linda Durham and grandmother, Jamie Johnson, for 12 of its 23 years in business.

Dr. Newman spent six months renovating the space and opened for business on October 31, 2016.

Newman was passionate about the project - and about serving his native community.

He is joined at Newman Dental by Ashlie Johnson Gallaher, RDH; Tammy Sampson Pritchett, RDA; Jamie Johnson and Lisa Johnson Newman.

Newman was led into the dental field by "a strong desire to make a tangible difference in people's everyday lives."

He had previously planned to join his uncle, dentist Dr. Wayne L. Johnson; however, Johnson retired earlier than expected.

Dr. Newman expressed his decision to come back and practice in Lebanon was "one of the best decisions I've ever made."

"Lebanon is a special place that has always been and always will be my home. I continue to be humbled and forever grateful for the warm reception we have received from Lebanon and those who call it home as well," he said.

Recently, Newman was honored by the Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerce with a Cedar Tree Award during the chamber's annual membership banquet.

Newman Dental Associates offers general dentistry, including prosthodontics, root canals and oral surgery, cosmetic dentistry and Botox.

"My day is very diverse, and I enjoy what I do," he said.

Most importantly, he enjoys the relationships he builds with patients.
