'Dogs split Saturday at Southern Poly

ON FRIDAY -- Kevin T. Greene tossed six-plus effective innings while Josciel Veras and Craig Monson each collected two hits and two RBIs, as Cumberland used a six-run fifth inning to win its season-opener 6-2 over Southern Poly Friday.The Bulldogs and the Hornets will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Central Time to conclude the series.Greene, a junior lefthander from Knoxville, allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts to pick up the victory. He retired eight of the first nine batter of the game and ran into trouble just once, when SPSU plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.Mitch Rainer tossed the final 2.2 innings for the Bulldogs, working around a single and a throwing error in the eighth to preserve the season-opening win.Cory Urquhart added two hits as well for Cumberland, part of a 10-hit attack for the club, while six different players scored in the contest.Jordan Egan took the loss for the Hornets (5-2), giving up six earned runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings. He walked one and struck out eight.The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out in the fourth with singles from Urquhart, Veras and Monson, but Tyler Anderson and Richie Seaton both struck out to end the threat with the game still scoreless.The Hornets got on the board in the bottom of the inning after DeMarcus Tidwell walked and moved to second on a passed ball. A single to left from Jordan Williams plated a run and Williams later scored on a two-out single up the middle by Josue Quinones.But Cumberland erupted for six runs on five hits, starting with singles from Daniel Harrison and Tyler Alford before Chris Hall reached on a bunt single. Harrison scored on the play when a throw from the catcher, Williams, got by the third baseman.Urquhart was hit with one out, loading the bases again, before a two-run single through the left side from Veras and a two-run triple down the rightfield line by Monson chased Egan. Monson later scored on a squeeze bunt by Seaton for a 6-2 CU advantage.Cumberland opens the home schedule next Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Freed-Hardeman.
