Dear Ken: I was watching the first Christopher Reeve Superman movie recently. Who played his Earth mother, Martha Kent?
Playing Ma Kent in the 1978 film was Portland, Maine, native Phyllis Thaxter, now 90. A Broadway actor in the 1930s, she went to Hollywood in 1944 to make movies and by the mid-1950s was mainly working in TV. She was married for many years to James T. Aubrey Jr., who was president of CBS-TV. When Superman was being made in 1978, Thaxter was the mother-in-law of the films producer, Ilya Salkind.
Dear Ken: What year did Percy Sledge have his big hit song When a Man Loves a Woman?
R&B and soul singer Sledge hit the top of the charts with that tune, which he originally wrote as Why Did You Leave Me Baby, in 1966. Sledge, a native of Leighton, Ala., recorded the song in Sheffield, Ala. Last October, Sledge lent his voice to Cliff Richards album Soulicious and also appeared with the British pop singer during his concert tour.
