Purple Tigers hold off DCHS
Watertown tuned up for Friday's 2015 season-opener with a 21-20 win over DeKalb County Saturday in a two-quarter jamboree at Robinson Stadium.
Luke Turner scored for the Purple Tigers on a short run while Skylor Scales caught a pair of touchdown passes from Seth Price.
"With the JV part of the scrimmage, we got a lot of people some action under the lights," said WHS coach Gavin Webster. "We're trying to get kids ready. Our depth is not great -- we started two freshmen on defense in the varsity scrimmage. I thought we executed well on offense and didn't have a lot of mishaps -- overall our execution was pretty good on both sides of the ball."
Watertown opens the regular season at home Aug. 21 as traditional rival Gordonsville visits Robinson Stadium for a 7 p.m. encounter.
New headgear -- For the first time since the early 1960's Watertown will be wearing white helmets this season.
According to Purple Tiger historian Ken Fountain, Watertown has worn purple helmets since 1962 when a two-tone purple was utilized. A solid purple headgear was worn from 1963 until 2014 -- a span of 51 seasons.
MJHS Bears win 21-7
MT. JULIET -- Golden Bear back Jahuar Jackson scored on a 25 yard run in the first quarter of Mt. Juliet's 21-7 win over Beech Saturday in the Bucs vs. Bears Jamboree.
Soph wideout Aidan Raines scored on a 50 yard catch and run from Joey Hayes and later on a three yard run from scrimmage.
The Golden Bears will travel to Gallatin Friday, Aug,. 21 for the season-opener at the Wave Yard.
Commanders fall 6-0 -
CLARKSVILLE -- Malik Bell lobbed 24-yard TD pass to Marcus Taylor late in the second quarter, lifting West Creek to a 6-0 win over Friendship Christian Friday in the TOA Jamboree at Governors Stadium on the campus of Austin Peay State University.
The Commanders lost a score when a touchdown pass from Mikey Jones to Speedy Foutch was taken off the board due to a holding call.
The penalty-marred scrimmage saw the Commanders flagged numerous times -- taking a toll on the flow of the game.
FCS opens the 2015 regular season Friday, Aug. 21 at Davidson Academy.
WCHS tops host Eagles -
SHELBYVILLE -- Wilson Central tuned up for next week's regular season opener with a 19-7 victory over host Shelbyville Central Friday in the second annual Pencil City Jamboree.
Wildcats Blake Meadors, Jordan Wilson and Colton Reeder each scored touchdowns on short runs in the two-quarter scrimmage.
WCHS will open the 2015 season at home Friday, Aug. 21 against Beech High.
