John Patrick Edwards, 39, a former Wilson County Sheriffs Department Lieutenant, was indicted Monday by Davidson and Wilson County grand juries with multiple charges for offenses allegedly committed while serving as a police officer.
Edwards, of 931 Bass Lane, Mt. Juliet, was indicted by the Wilson County grand jury on one count of attempted first degree murder, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated robbery, seven counts of money laundering, two counts of official misconduct, two counts of fabrication of evidence, three counts of theft over $10,000 and one count of tampering with evidence.
On March 22, 2011, the 15th Judicial District Attorney Generals office requested the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to investigate allegations of theft and domestic violence against Edwards.
TBI originally arrested Edwards on March 24, on one count of theft over $10,000. At that time, Edwards was booked into the Wilson County Jail and posted a $50,000 bond. The investigation also determined that in March of 2011, Edwards attempted to kill his wife by poisoning her.
Further investigation revealed that Edwards also committed multiple criminal acts over the course of several years. Edwards is accused of claiming to witness a drug deal between two men, then proceeded to hold them at gunpoint, falsely arrested them and seized their vehicles and cash. Other vehicles that were legitimately seized by the Wilson County Sheriffs Office, Edwards forged documents on in an attempt to claim ownership.
In another instance, Edwards checked out an unknown amount of marijuana from the Wilson County Sheriffs Office evidence room and arranged for it to be sold for his personal gain. He also provided sensitive or confidential information to the target of a drug investigation in exchange for $15,000 cash.
On March 24, the 20th Judicial District Attorney General in Davidson County also requested a TBI investigation on Edwards. It was determined that in October of 2007, Edwards burglarized the residence of his former girlfriend and then gave the stolen items to his wife as gifts. The Davidson County grand jury indicted Edwards on May 3, 2011, for one count of theft of property over $60,000 and one count of aggravated burglary for that incident.
The TBI, State of Tennessee Comptrollers Office, the 15th Judicial District Attorneys Office and the Wilson County Sheriffs Office were involved in the state investigation. Edwards is currently incarcerated in the Robertson County Jail on a federal charge. In Wilson County, the case is being handled by a special prosecutor.
