Johnson has 21 for Wildcats
LEBANON -- Wilson Central took care of the little things and came away with a 52-43 victory over Lebanon Friday at a raucous Campbell Brandon Gym.
Contesting every shot and knocking down key free throws in the final minutes, the Wildcats out-scored LHS 30-22 in the second half. improving to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in District 9-AAA.
"The big key was taking care of the ball," said Central coach Chris Carney, "that's something we didn't do Tuesday (in a loss to Beech).
"We knew if we came in -- defended and took care of the ball we'd have a chance to win."
Wildcat Gavin Johnson connected on a perfect 6-of-6 at the line in the final 50 seconds of regulation to keep Lebanon at bay.
Johnson finished with a game-high 21 points and three -- pointers. He scored 16 in the second half and finished 8-of-8 at the charity stripe.
Cole Booth had 10 while Kene Aruh came off the bench for seven points and a couple of key blocked shots.
Lebanon struggled most of the night on offense and led briefly with 5:55 left in the third period before Central finished the period with a flourish.
Eddie Jackson led Lebanon with 14 points while Noah Mulaski added 12. JaKeese Turner had eight points -- all in the first half.
Now 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the district, Lebanon is scheduled to host Shelbyville Central Tuesday, Dec. 13.
Wilson Central will be on the road at Spring Hill High School in Maury County.
Monterey 74, Watertown 70
MONTEREY -- Watertown's unbeaten streak was snapped at nine Friday night as Monterey pulled off a 74-70 victory over the Purple Tigers.
Trailing 57-52 headed into the fourth quarter, Coach Matt Bradshaw's team out-scored their hosts 18-17 in the final eight minutes.
Watertown's Seth Price connected on four 3-pointers and finished with 21 points.
Austin Lasater had 13 points, Preston Tomlinson added 10 and Ty Love seven.
Watertown is scheduled to host Eagleville High Saturday afternoon and Jackson County Tuesday, Dec. 12.
MJ Christian 70, Merrol Hyde 64
MT. JULIET -- Tyler West had 20 points to lead three Mt. Juliet Christian Academy players in double figures Friday as the Saints rallied for a 70-64 victory over Merrol Hyde Magnet.
Down 14-7 early and 28-23 at intermission, MJCA out-scored their guests 47-36 in the second half.
Caylor Bates finished with 18 and Logan Anders drilled four 3-pointers to tally 14 as MJCA improved to 4-4 on the season.
MJ Christian will entertain Madison Academy Monday, Dec. 12.
Mt. Juliet 67, Portland 29
PORTLAND -- Mt. Juliet rolled to an early 24-5 lead and went on to post a 67-29 win at District 9-AAA rival Portland Friday.
Three Golden Bears cracked double figures led by 15 from Trey Pruitt, 12 from Joey Hayes and 10 from Brian Aiken.
Jordan Lockridge had three 3-pointers to finish with nine points as Mt. Juliet improved to 2-6 overall / 1-2 in the district.
Mt. Juliet is scheduled to host Siegel Monday, Dec. 12.
