Lady 'Cats play Memphis Central
There's no turning back now. Wilson Central will put a perfect 33-0 record on the line this afternoon as the Lady Wildcats open play in the BlueCross Championships against Memphis Central. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. at MTSU's Murphy Center.
WCHS head coach John Wild is no stranger to the BlueCross Championships -- being one of three Tennessee high school basketball coaches to win both a boys and a girls state championship.
In just his second season at Wilson Central, Wild led the Moore County boys to the state title in 1999, then in 2000 took the Gleason girls to the promised land with a state championship.
In 2012 he led the Riverdale girls to a Class AAA state championship before taking a position on the Lipscomb University coaching staff.
Wilson Central is led by Class AAA Miss Basketball finalist Kendall Spray. A UT-Martin signee, Spray holds TSSAA single season records for most 3-point baskets in a single season and a career.
Memphis Central comes into today's contest 33-2 after having defeated Bartlett 77-48 in Saturday's Class AAA sectional.
The Lady Warriors started the season 26-0. They lost to Memphis Overton 73-61 in the finals of the District 14-AAA tournament, then earned a measure of revenge by beating Overton 54-40 in the Region 8-AAA finals.
Memphis Central last made the state tournament in 2013 -- losing to Riverdale in the semifinals.
Senior point guard Miyah Barnes runs the show for the Lady Warriors, averaging 14.8 points per game.
A pair of sophomores also average in double figures - Jireh Washington (12.2 ppg) and Jasmine Carson (11.6 ppg).
General admission tickets are $10 per day. There are six games per day from Wednesday - Friday.
On Saturday, there will be one session of three championship games and general admission tickets are $12.
