Illness forces extra cleaning at SHE

"I was notified of this mid-week," Benson said, adding that letters describing illness symptoms were sent home to parents.


The State Health Department was notified and advised school healthcare officials on how to react.


The school went through two thorough cleanings last week before and after school hours and once over the weekend.


Principal Julie Beasley said no new cases have been identified so far this week. "Our attendance is better," she noted.


Teachers are encouraging students to wash their hands more frequently as well, since shigella bacteria passes from hand to mouth.
