Jessie Irene Nelson, 95, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016 at Providence Place Assisted Living in Mt. Juliet, TN.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Gallatin, TN, with Reverend Ken Shaw officiating.
Jessie was born March 18, 1921 in Livingston, MT, the only child of Francis and Jean (Simpson) Fisher. She started her third year of grade school in Kenosha, WI after her parents moved there following behind the exodus of the large Simpson clan. On July 13, 1940 Jessie and her high school sweetheart, Grant Nelson, eloped in Dubuque, Iowa and lived in Kenosha with her parents while Grant was in the Navy from 1941-1945. In 1949 Grant and Jessie, along with her parents, moved to Richmond, MN where they operated Shady Knoll Resort on Horseshoe Lake while raising their two sons before selling in 1975. In 1966 Nelson's Hilltop Restaurant, as part of a truck stop in Paynesville, MN, was built to be owned by Grant & Jessie Nelson which they operated until 1975. Being too young to retire, Jessie began her tenure as the production manager of the dining services at St. Cloud University in St. Cloud, MN. In 1998 Grant and Jessie moved to TN to be near family.
Besides being a fabulous cook, Jessie excelled in history and geography. She loved dogs, reading her Bible and mysteries, and she enjoyed scrapbooking with friends.
Her survivors include one son, Jay and Jan Nelson of Buckeye, AZ; one granddaughter, Michelle Moyer of Del Rio, TN; three great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Calvin and Charlotte; and three great-great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Grant who died in 2005; and son, Ken who died in 1997.
