Reports indicate nine of 34 applicants for the position for the job were interviewed and McDowell accepted the job Wednesday night. While he tries to pull together a staff, work up a summer camp schedule and get familiar with the team -- he’s also getting married June 18 to longtime girlfriend Merideth Thomas.

“I’ll be able to take a deep breath when the (TSSAA mandated) dead period gets here,” McDowell said Thursday morning. “I’m a Blue Devil and I’m excited about the opportunity,” McDowell said, “I appreciate Mrs. Sloan giving me the chance to come back.”

McDowell, 29, spent four years (two non-faculty) as an assistant basketball coach and head girl’s soccer coach at Lebanon before taking a teaching / coaching position at Riverdale High. A former District 7AAA soccer coach of the year at LHS, he took the Riverdale girls to the state soccer tournament and had his 2011 Wilson Central boy’s soccer team one win away from a berth in the Spring Fling.

A 2000 graduate of Lebanon High where he played basketball for Randall Hutto, McDowell is a graduate of Lipscomb University.
