Ten families in the Mt. Juliet and Hermitage area got a welcomed surprise recently when representatives from Mt. Juliet's Joy Church and the MJPD with an unexpected gift - balloons, a gift basket and a $1,000 gift card.

"Here at Joy Church, we have a vast amount of police officers that attend the church. We have a tremendous heart and compassion for them," Joy Church Senior Pastor Jim Frease said. "They don't always get the kind of recognition that we feel they deserve. We consider police officers and first responders to be heroes in the community.

"Sometimes, when a police officer comes to the door of someone in the community, it can be a little intimidating," he continued. "We wanted to change that around, and we want the community to have a visit from a police officer go from intimidating to exciting."

The goal of Joy Church is to serve the community in "a very significant way so that we can exemplify the love of Jesus Christ in a tangible and practical way," Frease said, adding, "What better way is there to do that than to partner with those that have the same vision that we do - to serve our community."
