July holiday represents heart, soul of nation

By SAM HATCHER           It’s the heart of summer and the heart and soul of our great nation. It’s the Fourth of July, a day set aside to celebrate our nation’s independence.         In 1776, the founders of our democracy declared our nation to be free and independent.

Never have the words scribed more than 200 years ago by these leaders had more impact than they do today.

Our country continues its greatness and our government remains sound and solvent largely to the credit of the Declaration of Independence signed July 4, 1776.

If there can be one phrase in this document that stands out above all the rest perhaps it would be “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
