Men stand 5-5 on the season
The Cumberland men's basketball team will be in McKenzie tonight, taking on Bethel College at the Crisp Arena.
Coach Lonnie Thompson's Phoenix improved to 5-5 on the season following Saturday's 89-74 victory over Martin Methodist at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
Jamonte Graham posted a season high 22 points, while three other players scored double-figures.
Next home game set Feb. 11
MARIETTA, Ga. - Life University used a 13-4 run to open the second half and never looked back in a 92-71 victory over Cumberland Thursday night at The Eagles' Nest.
The Phoenix (10-13, 3-7 Mid-South) and Running Eagles (12-8, 6-5) were tied at 34 with less than two minutes left in the first half, but Life netted the final six points of the period and then started the second half with the 13-4 spurt, with Williams scoring six points and Dantzler adding four during the stretch.
Running Eagles outgun CU 102-98
LEBANON -- Life University nailed a dozen triples and Dalarian Williams netted a game-high 27 points in a 102-98 victory over Cumberland Thursday night at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
The Phoenix (9-12, 2-6 Mid-South) shot 59 percent from the field and hit nine 3-pointers, but Life put together a 22-7 spurt to end the first half and then held off CU in the second period.
MSC tournament play-in game --
FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Ninth-seeded Shawnee State (Ohio) used a 12-0 run midway through the second half en route to a 70-59 win over eighth-seeded Cumberland Thursday at the 2015 Mid-South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament at the Frankfort Convention Center.
The Bears (11-18) advance to face top-seeded Pikeville (Ky.) on Friday in the tournament's quarterfinals.
Cumberland (9-21) trimmed the Bears' lead to four (63-59) with three minutes left in the game, but Shawnee State closed with seven straight points to avenge two regular season losses to the Bulldogs.
Shawnee State ended the game making 51.1 percent (23-of-45) of its shots compared to just 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from Cumberland.
Ethan Moffatt led the Bears with 14 points -- part of 37 points off the Shawnee State bench. Jorian Hudson added 13 while Frederick Moore chipped in 12.
Jerrod Gaston led the Bulldogs with 13 while Paul Williams contributed 12.
Roadrunner Classic in Dalton, GA --
Still smarting from a narrow road loss Wednesday, the Cumberland mens basketball team will close out the 2014 portion of the schedule this weekend in the Roadrunner Booster Club Classic in Dalton, Ga.
The Bulldogs, 5-8 overall, will take on 13th-ranked Dalton State College Friday at 7 p.m . Central Time and Concordia University-Selma on Saturday at 1 p.m. before taking a break for Christmas.
