Cumberland University's Zach Kean was named the Mid-South Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, officials announced Monday.

A senior from Cross Plains (East Robertson High), Kean finished second out of 54 golfers at the RedHawk Spring Classic recording a two-day score of 3-under par 141.

LEBANON -- Brescia's Alex Flock hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs while Logan Wilkerson tossed five strong innings as the Bearcats posted a 5-4 victory over Cumberland Tuesday, March 21 at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

Brescia (4-16) broke a six-game losing streak with the win, with Zach Johnson plating the winning run with a two-out single in the seventh.

Johnson was on base four times in the game with a pair of singles and two walks.

Cumberland's Austin Krajnak repeated as the Mid-South Conference Player of the Week award winner on Monday, batting .476 with four home runs and nine RBIs in seven games for the Phoenix.

The Little Elm, Texas, native belted home runs in all three games of the weekend series against Georgetown College, including a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth in the second game of the series.

Phoenix move to 5-5 overall
BATESVILLE, ARK -- Mitch Langer and Travis Dohr each tossed seven shutout innings to pick up victories on the mound and Cumberland exploded for seven runs in the final two innings of the second contest, posting 1-0 and 10-0 victories over Lyon College in baseball action Friday in Batesville, Ark.

Dohr (2-0) won the seven-inning opener with seven shutout frames, allowing three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

The righthander worked around an error and a walk in the first inning, retiring 14 of the next 17 batters.

National wrestler of the week
Cumberland University senior Sammy Rosario earned NAIA Wrestler of the Week accolades on Tuesday after posting three dual match victories and improving his overall mark to 21-4 this academic year, as announced by the national office.

The Cartersville, Ga., native pinned Lindsey Wilson's Kadin Scoggins at 2:25 to start the week and followed that with a 14-3 Major Decision over Southeastern University's Jaaziel Santana.

Cumberland University senior linebacker Nathan Jernigan was named a Second Team All-American by the American Football Coaches Tuesday, as announced by the AFCA and the NAIA.
The Eagleville High School graduate was voted Mid-South Conference West Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season last month.
"Nathan has been one of our team leaders since he came on campus five years ago," said CU head coach Donnie Suber.

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Diondrey Holt netted 18 points and Delaryn Dodd posted 15 points and seven rebounds, including a huge board on a missed 1-and-1 in the final seconds as Cumberland came away with a 72-69 victory over 11th-ranked Campbellsville in men's basketball action Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Powell Athletic Center.

Cumberland (4-5 overall, 1-1 MSC) put together a 15-5 run in the middle of the second half, including two jumpers from Cameron Johnson and two dunks by Dodd, and Jamonte Graham nailed a 3-pointer from the wing for a 61-49 advantage with 7:35 remaining.

Cumberland defensive back Alex Campagne was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday, posting nine tackles, forcing a fumble, returning another fumble 12 yards and recording two pass breakups in CU's victory over Campbellsville University.

The Crestview, Fla., native blocked the PAT on the Tigers first TD of the game and picked up a fumble, returning it 12 yards in the second quarter.

LEBANON -- Yudai Yamaguchi and Ignacio Mangada each posted a goal and an assist, as eighth-ranked Campbellsville University scored three times in the final 18 minutes in a 3-1 victory over No. 23 Cumberland Tuesday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.

The match was scoreless for more than 70 minutes, with Cumberland (8-4-1, 4-1-0 Mid-South) missing a couple of good scoring chances early and another midway through the second half, but the depth of the Tigers (9-0-1, 2-1-0) showed as the match wore on.

Strutz made five saves and improved to 8-3-1 in net this season in the 3-1 win.

CLINTON, Miss. - Matt Brasher booted a 37-yard field goal at the buzzer lifting NCAA Division II Mississippi College to a 27-26 victory over Cumberland Saturday, Sept. 24 at Robinson-Hale Stadium.
Cumberland missed three extra points in the game - one left, one off the right upright and the last one without an attempt after a bad snap - but converted a two-point conversion in the first quarter to overcome one of the missed points. Brasher also missed a 37-yard field goal attempt on the first play of the final period, but converted a 26-yard try later in the fourth quarter before the final three points on the last play of the game.

Cumberland led 1-0 and 2-1, but Reece Weldon tied the match twice for the Seahawks, converting a penalty kick in the 53rd minute and drilling a free kick from 35 yards in the 76th minute.

Creighton's Kevin Connolly to enroll
Coach Woody Hunt's effort to upgrade the roster of his 2017 baseball team continues to gather steam with the commitment of another NCAA Division I transfer. Creighton University outfielder Kevin Connolly (6-1, 180) will join the Phoenix program this fall with three solid seasons under his belt.

"Kevin is a proven Division I hitter, a guy who can give us some production at the top of our lineup," Coach Hunt said.

As a high school senior, Connolly led Creighton Prep in Omaha, NE to the best record in school history (34-4) and a state championship.

Cumberland University's baseball program has landed 2016 NJCAA All-American Austin Sojka, a power hitting infielder from Panola Community College (TX). He will enroll in the fall and have two years of eligibility remaining at CU.

A native of Huntington Beach, CA, Sojka played for former CU assistant Todd Shelton at Panola where the Ponies went 38-19 in 2016.

Cumberland softball coach Heather Stanfill announced the signing of junior college players Briah Winchester and Jordan Roberts to scholarship papers this week for the 2016-17 academic year.

Roberts batted .347 with eight doubles, 18 home runs, 46 RBIs and 46 runs scored in 58 games this past season at Chattanooga State Community College.

The Conyers, Ga., native added 25 walks for a .441 on-base percentage for a club that finished 45-20 overall in 2016.

Sepulveda has posted a 13-5 dual match singles record this spring and a 17-3 mark in doubles in duals with de Souza, reaching No. 9 in the latest Oracle/ITA NAIA Rankings, the highest ranking of her career.

Cumberland senior outfielder Ryan Dickison was voted First Team All-Mid-South Conference and Stephen Fischer, Nick McGrew and Mike Melendez all garnered Second Team honors, as announced by the league office Wednesday in advance of the conference tournament that begins Thursday and Friday with best 2-of-3 series.

The Hendersonville native served as the head coach at Cumberland from 2006-12, winning a Mid-South Conference West Division championship in 2008. Forty-four of his players earned All-Mid-South Conference honors and 101 were named Mid-South Conference Scholar-Athletes accolades.

Men, women ousted March 3
FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Brandon Bob Jones and Chris Johnson each posted double-doubles in No. 9-seed St. Catharine's (Ky.) 69-63 win over No. 8-seed Cumberland Thursday at the Mid-South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament at the Frankfort Convention Center.

Leading 33-27 at intermission, St. Catharine never trailed in the second half, but could never shake the Phoenix (12-18) -- marking the 12th defeat this season by single digits for the team.

COLUMBIA, KY -- Cumberland University's Nicole Bowers has been named the Mid-South Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, conference officials announced Monday.

Bowers, a junior forward who prepped a Nashville's Hillsboro High School, led the Phoenix to a 2-0 week to close out their regular season with wins over No. 21 Pikeville (Ky.) and Cumberlands (Ky.).

Cumberland University volleyball coach Kathy Salughter didn't have to go far to pick up a quality recruit for the coming season as she signed Lebanon High senior Briana Clemmons to scholarship papers Friday morning.

A solid front line player for the Lady Devils who was an All District 9-AAA selection, Clemmons plans on pursuing a major in Cumberland's acclaimed athletic training program. She is the daughter of Patrick and Holly Clemmons.

Roughly a week after signing McGavock tailback Kendall Johnson, Cumberland University football has inked two more Nashville high school standouts in KimLee North and Tamim Aldarawcheh from John Overton High School.

The teammates helped led the Bobcats to a record of 7-5 and a second round berth in the Class 6A TSSAA playoffs -- where they were eliminated by eventual state champion Ravenwood.

Lebanon High senior Peyton Bell inked scholarship papers Thursday morning to continue his eduaction and bowling career at Cumberland University.

Bell, who bowled an average of 214 for the Blue Devils, was the District 12 MVP. He is the son of Kevin Bell.

Carter, a senior out of Brentwood (Ravenwood High), led the Phoenix to a 4-0 week as they beat Brescia (Ky.) at home and they capped off the weekend with a three-game sweep against Lyon (Ark.).

Player of the Week
LEBANON -- Cumberland's Bre Neal was voted the Mid-South Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday after posting her fourth double-double of the season at Middle Georgia State in CU's only game.

The Memphis native posted a career-best 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds along with three assists and three steals in a 75-68 win over the Knights. The senior hit 7-of-12 shots and was 5-for-6 at the foul line.

Running Eagles outgun CU 102-98
LEBANON -- Life University nailed a dozen triples and Dalarian Williams netted a game-high 27 points in a 102-98 victory over Cumberland Thursday night at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

The Phoenix (9-12, 2-6 Mid-South) shot 59 percent from the field and hit nine 3-pointers, but Life put together a 22-7 spurt to end the first half and then held off CU in the second period.

Five CU football players honored
LEBANON -- Cumberland football players Nathan Anderson, Owen Canady, Nathan Jernigan, Nytrellis Ross and Luke Webb were all named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, as announced by the national office over the holidays.

Student-athletes must be a junior or senior academically and maintain a 3.50 grade-point-average and above to be eligible for the award.

CU athletics launches new nickname

As of Monday, Jan. 4 Cumberland University athletics has a new logo and nickname.

In a release from the athletic department, a singular nickname "The Cumberland Phoenix" was unveiled for all things related to the CU sports programs after years under the nickname "Bulldogs".
